Board of Stewards
There are generally three categories of voting members of what the UMC calls the “Church Council” and what we, for years, have called our “Board of Stewards”.
At-large members are voting members who are nominated each year by the Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development, headed by the senior pastor of a church. The Board of Stewards is split into three, three-year classes for its at-large members to ensure that the majority of at-large members aren’t rotating off of the board in any given year.
Ex officio members “represent the program ministries of the church as outlined in ¶ 243” (UMC Book of Discipline ¶ 252.5). Per the Book of Discipline (¶ 252 “The Church Council”), several roles are required, and are “ex officio” members of the committee with full voting privileges, except if noted. “Ex officio” members are voting Board of Stewards members because of the positions that they hold at the church, either as “program ministries” leaders, pastors, or staff.
Officers are also nominated by the Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development each year and serve for one-year terms and may be re-nominated each year.
